DBC VIDEOGRAPHY RFQ

Jon Chiang is a Chinese-Peruvian Commercial Director

One quick story:

I spent over a little a year contracting with DBC editing branded films and social content in 2017/18. I loved coming in to the office and working on something that felt aligned to my values everyday. It would be a pleasure to be able to go into the field and help capture the visuals and stories of DBC.

Thanks for watching and considering my RFQ application.

Below are a few related samples for the project. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Tourism NWT - Sweet Darkness

Director: Jon Chiang
DOP: Robin Leveille
Editor: Jon Chiang
Sound Recordist: Jon Chiang

A four day shoot in the NWT for Spectacular NWT, we captured a piece to weave the beauty and awe of the winter. Hired by FLOW Agency, our nimble crew of three captured dog sledding, aurora watching, and driving the Ice highway, all in temperatures reaching -25 celsius.

I directed talent, conducted interviews / voice over, edited the spot and worked with our finishing partners to bring this one to life.

BC Achievement Foundation - Polygon Award in First Nation Arts

Director / Producer: Jon Chiang
DOP: Kaayla Whachell
Line Producer: Hayley Morin

We filmed three profiles of award winning indigenous artists in 7 days across Vancouver + Vancouver Island. Above is a trailer and one of the films.

The BC Achievement awards commissioned me for this project. Not being indigenous, it was important to me to bring voices and perspectives in our crew to help bring these stories to life.

I brought on mixed-indigenous DOP Kaayla Whachell to help capture the visuals on digital and super16 mm and indigenous line producerHayley Morin to support production remotely. I conducted the interview and supervised post production.

Tourism Manitoba - The Wandering Ones

Director: Jon Chiang
Producer: Joanna Wong
DOP: Robin Leveille

Our crew of three travelled to Churchill Manitoba to capture Chinese travel influencer, North Rock, experiencing polar bears for the first time.

I directed our talent, conducted our interview with our translator and edited the branded film.

BIO:

Jon has always been drawn to universal stories woven from underrepresented people. Raised by Chinese parents born in Lima, Peru, he grew up in his familyโ€™s grocery store in East Vancouver. Walking the blurred lines of his Chinese and Latino heritage, he developed a sensitivity that he uses to reveal the truths about our shared experiences. When heโ€™s working, you can find him on the bike, folding empanadas or chasing his toddler around.

His work has been recognized by the 1.4 Awards, Berlin Commercial Awards, shots.net, Musicbed and the Applied Arts Photography & Illustration Awards - Motion . His films have been featured by NOWNESS, Film Shortage, BOOOOOOOM and screened at the VIMFF World Tour, Vancouver Asian Film Festival and Asian American Film Festival among others.
