Jon Chiang is a Chinese-Peruvian Commercial Director

Jon Chiang is a filmmaker known for intimate stories in which people see their own lives.

His work ranges from directing campaigns for agencies like Rethink to documentaries and TV series on CBC Gem, Knowledge Network and TELUS.

Raised by Chinese parents born in Lima, Peru, he spent almost every weekend at his family’s East Van grocery store. Shaped by his upbringing between cultures, he makes work that keeps returning to family, identity and finding a place to belong.

Central to his process is trust. Through his calm sets and relationship building with his cast, he gets real people and actors alike to open up quickly to capture honest moments. Those instincts shaped “Thank You Grandma (多謝嫲嫲)” a scripted narrative for APPI/Asian Heritage Month and shortlisted at the 1.4 Awards. He brings the same process and sensibilities across his work in commercials and branded films.

He is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada.
